Maryland weather or how to not freeze your butt when the power lines get cut.
Edited on Mon Feb-08-10 10:10 PM by undergroundpanther
Maryland weather sucks, We just had a snow storm hit this past Friday- Saturday. It dumped around 18-25 inches of snow here.Branches cracked and fell on my roof with thuds, snow chunks fell with thuds during that blizzard. Tuesday we will be getting another coming storm.it will dump another 18-20 inches of fucking snow on us again..My neighbor asked ,where are we going to put the new snow? Good question.

Already the dug out driveway snow mounds around here are already nearly as tall as I am.Right now my house is toasty 50 degrees. I have a friends generator running on my back porch.it has been going 5 hours today. We have a dinky ceramic heater running off it,and a lamp.

Repeatedly I asked BGE for help. On their web map I see less and less customers without power.I am beginning to wonder if I will be the last person on the list in harford county to have power restored?
http://www.bge.com/portal/site/bge/menuitem.eb0798e0c71... /

They finally came early this morning repaired some wires ,and failed to hook up the neutral or grounding wire. I woke up and thought power was on,but no one told me it was not grounded,so I almost had a house fire today.I called BGE and they lied about how many people were without power and they gave me a runaround..BGE fucked up.Again I am without power enough to run the furnace.I am pissed. and cold. How long will it be until they return? I hope it is done before Tuesday. Before the next shit storm rolls in.It's fucking cold!

I think, at least in Maryland a new ice age is upon us. I'm already sick of it.

1. Always check your grounding after a utility service repair!
I learned this lesson the hard way after Hurricane Charley.

You can damage a lot of electronics.

This makes me think that your house ground is not wired correctly; like from the days the house was built. THEN, the power company somehow put the second side of the 220 on the ground line, resulting in 220V on all 120V outlets. That's a bit dangerous. Second, it will burn anything up that has a 120V plug on it.

or a water pipe. It should be very low. 1 or 2 ohms.

The house will have it's own ground, so really it generally is not a problem as long as they are working on the pole and not in or near your house. If you've ever noticed either a bare or green wire that connects to to a copper rod driven into the ground or to a water pipe, that's the house ground. Generally both the city ground (from the pole) and the house ground will be tied together close to where the service enters the house.

I'm thinking in this case, the ground is ok, it's one side of the 220 that is gone. That's why part of the house has lights and the stove works (I'm not sure how well, but it's working).

If you have doubts about your electrical situation, take a lamp and plug it in and turn it on. If it lights up you're good.

Unless you are comfortable around your breaker box, don't get to creative. City power is dangerous.

31. It's pretty easy.
I'll try and keep this simple and cheap without putting you in any danger.

You can get a circuit tester that will check ground-neutral connections for around ten bucks at most hardware stores. They're not as good for diagnosing problems as a multimeter, but they're a lot safer for the average user. Most look something like <http://www.amazon.com/Tripp-3-LED-CIRCUIT-TESTER-CT120/... |this>. What that tells you is that the neutral and ground line have continuity between them. (Both are hooked up in the breaker box.) That will tell you if the person that wired the outlets connected the wires properly in that specific outlet.

To check that your box itself is properly grounded, there should be a ground bar driven into the dirt right beside your meter.
There should be a thick cable (About the thickness of a cigarette) running from the pole in the ground up the side of the pole and into the box. It should be connected to the neutral bus bar. (The long bar inside the breaker box that has only white and bare wires in it.)
If that's connected, there's a good chance your box is grounded properly.

I'd lose it.Anyway, fried power strips STINK..OMG,with all these scented candles lit up in here you'd think they'd cover the stench but they don't..However on the bright side, when my smelly cat,Bear lets off one of his horrible SBD farts they don't linger in the air as long as they normally do. Normally his farts linger long enough to empty the room..Now with all these candles going his farts get evaporated fast.Just after the unfortunate fart smeller yells "Ugh Bear farted ! "and pushes him off the lap & onto the floor! The candles burn a little brighter than it's GONE.....LULZ

Diary of a Snow Shoveler

Author unknown

December 8: 6:00 PM.

It started to snow. The first snow of the season and the wife and I took our cocktails and sat for hours by the window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven. It looked like a Grandma Moses Print. So romantic we felt like newlyweds again. I love snow!
December 9:

We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape. What a fantastic sight! Can there be a more lovely place in the Whole World? Moving here was the best idea I've ever had. Shoveled for the first time in years and felt like a boy again. I did both our driveway and the sidewalks. This afternoon the snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again. What a perfect life.
December 12:

The sun has melted all our lovely snow. Such a disappointment. My neighbor tells me not to worry, we'll definitely have a white Christmas. No snow on Christmas would be awful! Bob says we'll have so much snow by the end of winter, that I'll never want to see snow again. I don't think that's possible. Bob is such a nice man I'm glad he's our neighbor.
December 14:

Snow lovely snow! 8" last night. The temperature dropped to -20. The cold makes everything sparkle so. The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks. This is the life! The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried everything again. I didn't realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I'll certainly get back in shape this way. I wish I wouldn't huff and puff so.
December 15:

20 inches forecast. Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Blazer. Bought snow tires for the wife's car and 2 extra shovels. Stocked the freezer. The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes out. I think that's silly. We aren't in Alaska, after all.
December 16:

Ice storm this morning. Fell on my ass on the ice in the driveway putting down salt. Hurt like hell. The wife laughed for an hour, which I think was very cruel.
December 17:

Still way below freezing. Roads are too icy to go anywhere. Electricity was off for 5 hours. I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm. Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to irritate her. Guess I should've bought a wood stove, but won't admit it to her. God I hate it when she's right. I can't believe I'm freezing to death in my own living room.
December 20:

Electricity's back on, but had another 14" of the damn stuff last night. More shoveling. Took all day. Goddamn snowplow came by twice. Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said they're too busy playing hockey. I think they're lying. Called the only hardware store around to see about buying a snow blower and they're out. Might have another shipment in March. I think they're lying. Bob says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and bill me. I think he's lying.
December 22:

Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white shit fell today, and it's so cold it probably won't melt till August. Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to piss. By the time I got undressed, pissed and dressed again. I was too tired to shovel. Tried to hire Bob who has a plow on his truck for the rest of the winter; but he says he's too busy. I think the asshole is lying.
December 23:

Only 2" of snow today. And it warmed up to 0o. The wife wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morning. What is she nuts!!! Why didn't she tell me to do that a month ago? She says she did but I think she's lying.
December 24:

6". Snow packed so hard by snowplow, l broke the shovel. Thought I was having a heart attack. If I ever catch the son of a bitch who drives that snowplow, I'll drag him through the snow by his balls. I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and then he comes down the street at a 100 miles an hour and throws snow all over where I've just been! Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas Carols with her and open our presents, but I was busy watching for the goddamn snowplow.
December 25:

Merry Christmas. 20 more inches of the !=3D@x@!x!x1 slop tonight. Snowed in. The idea of shoveling makes my blood boil. God I hate the snow! Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a donation and I hit him over the head with my shovel. The wife says I have a bad attitude. I think she's an idiot. If I have to watch "It's a Wonderful Life" one more time, I'm going to kill her.
December 26:

Still snowed in. Why the hell did I ever move here? It was all HER idea. She's really getting on my nerves.
December 27:

Temperature dropped to -30o and the pipes froze.
December 28:

Warmed up to above -50. Still snowed in. THE BITCH is driving me crazy!!!!!
December 29:

10 more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave in. That's the silliest thing I ever heard. How dumb does he think I am?
December 30:

Roof caved in. The snow plow driver is suing me for a million dollars. The wife went home to her mother. 9" predicted.
December 31:

Set fire to what's left of the house. No more shoveling.
January 8:

I feel so good. I just love those little white pills they keep giving me. Why am I tied to the bed?

yep that parody tells the real story about snow don't it? Thanks, it's good to feel I am not alone. Anyway the pic of the cat in my other post, I found it online. It has 3 people,,like my real life,my roomates and I,all on the couch huddled under blankets freezing and a cat there..If the cat was white it would have been picture perfect of my situation. BTW it really reeked when Bear farted into the intake of the space heater. It blew his fart all over the room and what really made it gross is the heater warmed it up.Do Not let stinky cats around any air intakes .Ugggh..Shudder.

4. Light bulbs are safer heaters. Pick a room and light it up. 100W is 100W no matter what the source
This is the one situation where incandescents deliver what you want ... heat. I imagine the heater is a 1200W so 12 100W light bulbs will keep you as warm and the filaments are glass encased for safety.

However, if you go over to the gun thread, they'll tell you 1) get your gun 2) get your other gun 3) Ok get all your guns. Snuggle up to them and they will keep you warm.

Put blankets over the window if you have them to spare. Don't put yourself in danger of freezing. Act like your life depends on what you do 2 hours ago.

13. Gas stove I take it? Close the door, turn the stove up high until you go to bed.
then turn it off. You're probably losing more heat out the door than the stove is providing.

Get the house as warm as possible before you go to bed. The lights will slow the cooling but will probably not warm the place up.

5. So I take it you have at least one side of your 220 service. Take the lamp and plug it into wall
sockets. The lamp is something (back in the day) that TV repairmen used to keep shorts from burning things up.

They really don't care which side is hot, they are cheap, they are insulated and reasonably tolerant of abuse. If the lamp lights keep it plugged in for additional heat. If you have a hot plug use it!.

Is your refrigerator running? If so you have at least one side of the 120V service. Use it for heat.

If you want to use the little heater, it should be ok anywhere the lamp works.

Unfortunately are all downstairs. All the lamps down there are on already.Upstairs we have the stove.Stove is electric,on warm and the oven door is cracked .The fridge is not on.
In the Fridge I have snow pack in the bins,to keep stuff cold & ,snow in the freezer keeping stuff frozen. Some of my frozen food is outside in a cooler in ziplocks and the cooler is packed in with snow,as it is sitting in the snow..

10. Then you have an extension cord from the generator to the upstairs?
I'm confused now. If you have an extension cord hefty enough for the little heater, then plug it into the wall downstairs and use city power. Save the generator in case the power goes totally out again.

Keep the lights on, they are safe and provide heat. Swap out little bulbs for the biggest you have.

it is outside of my house, on my cement side porch, the cord runs in from the porch ,in the side door, in to my living room.
The cord is not long enough to go from downstairs to up here.We tried it.

The problem I'm thinking is after you go to sleep the house freezes. In Colorado people literally freeze to death wrapped in blankets. (That's one reason I live in S FL)

I guess you noticed I'm a light bulb for heat evangelist because they are safe in uncertain electrical conditions.

Like I said, the problem isn't now .. it's two hours from now, for the rest of the night.

Stay warm and I'll be looking forward to your rant tomorrow.

9. here's a trick to try..
Sprinkle some chili powder/cayenne powder in your socks, try just a little at 1st,
give it an hour,& then, if needed, add more chili powder.
Some People are more sensitive to this, & a little can be overwhelmingly *HOT!*
Also, take Care to avoid getting it in eyes, & wash your hands, thoroughly..
Experiment with it, it CAN warm Your whole body, & can also prevent frostbite.

I think, BEFORE an emergency, WE ALL need to *try* living without utilities for a few days,& figure out the basic necessities, where our Homes make us vulnerable. I lived many years 'off the grid', & will ALWAYS look at new dwellings with an eye toward "survival" 1st. Seems to me, a real "Homeland Security Dept." would address this & advise the Citizens, ESPECIALLY in cities.

Also.. hugs are helpful. Many, many (((hugs!)))

15. What a bunch of jerks.
Would it help to boil some water on the stove? I used to do that when the power was out but the gas was still on.

Would it still work?

21. The stove is electric. Any heat source (water or not) is helpful. Just turn it on.
However, there is a concern about the grounding, which can be a shock hazard. That's why I'm thinking light bulbs.

32. stay warm, DUers!
we get ice storms in the winter in Oklahoma-i've been lucky this year to keep my power during all of our ice storms/blizzards (it's been a very odd winter here). but when we have lost power my husband, dogs and i all bundle under every blanket we own, and i usually read to my husband by candlelight.

it's romantic, in a 19th century sort of way. but it can be very dangerous, too, so please stay warm and safe.

just in case.
